While on your way to a national conference on global climate change in Anchorage, Alaska, the small plane you and your fellow
students were on crashes. You and your friends survive, but both the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash. It is
mid-January, and you're in Northern Canada. The daily temperature is 25 below zero, and the night time temperature is 40
below zero. There is a thick blanket of snow on the ground, and the countryside is heavily wooded with several creeks crossing
the area. The nearest town is over 20 miles away. You are all dressed in city clothes appropriate for the conference. Basically
all that you have is what you are wearing and a few miscellaneous items from the wreckage. Your group of survivors managed
to salvage the following items:
A ball of steel wool
A small ax
A loaded .45 calibur pistol
Can of Crisco shortening
Newspapers (one per person)
Cigarette lighter (without fluid)
Extra shirt and pants for each survivor
20 x 20 foot piece of heavy duty canvas
A sectional air map made of plastic
One quart of 100 proof whiskey
A compass
Family-size chocolate bars (one per person)
Your task is to rank all 12 items above in order of importance for your group's survival. You have about 20 minutes to
make your decision. Rank your items 1 through 12 with 1 being the item you think will best enhance your chance for survival
and 12 being the least important.
Keep these things in mind as you make your decisions. Remember where you are and what time of year it is. These 12 items
are all that you have besides the clothes on your back. Everyone, while not seriously injured, is in a state of shock from
surviving a plane crash and the death of both pilots. In this type of climate it doesn't take long for hypothermia to set
in. Search and rescue teams will soon be looking for you, but remember this is pretty rough terrain and it may be a while
before your group is located. The closest town is very far away. Should you consider traveling to it for help or staying
put and waiting for the rescue teams to find your group?
